About Fern Lake
Fern Lake sits at 9,545 feet in the Moraine Park and Cub Creek area, reached by a hard 3.8-mile one-way hike from Fern Lake Trailhead. NPS route descriptions place Fern Falls along the approach and describe the trail as following the Big Thompson River corridor before climbing higher.
The lake is forested rather than open and windswept, with nearby routes continuing toward Spruce Lake, Odessa Lake, and the Bear Lake side. It is a good example of a lake hike where the approach is as important as the destination.
NPS wilderness-site data also lists Fern Lake in the Bear Lake Area: 3.8 miles from the trailhead, 1,380 feet of elevation change, an average snow-free date of June 10, and a site elevation of 9,530 feet.
