About Thunder Lake
Thunder Lake is a hard Wild Basin destination at 10,574 feet, 6.8 miles one-way from Wild Basin Trailhead. NPS wilderness site information lists Thunder Lake campsites in a forested area near the lake and gives the same 6.8-mile approach from Wild Basin.
This is one of the major named lakes of Wild Basin, and it feels like it: long approach, forested travel, and a high basin that sits beyond the casual waterfall stops lower in the drainage. It is a destination to plan for, not a quick add-on.
NPS wilderness-site data also lists Thunder Lake in the Wild Basin Area: 6.8 miles from the trailhead, 2,070 feet of elevation change, an average snow-free date of July 5, and a site elevation of 10,570 feet.
🚻 Restroom available at the Wild Basin TH trailhead. Vault toilet, picnic tables, and drinking water. In winter the trailhead moves closer to the entrance where an accessible bathroom is available.
