Chasm Lake

Iconic lake below Longs Peak's Diamond face

Chasm Lake, Longs Peak Area, Rocky Mountain National Park — 11792 ft elevation

About Chasm Lake

Chasm Lake sits below Longs Peak at 11,792 feet, reached by a hard 4.2-mile one-way hike from Longs Peak Trailhead. NPS describes the route as climbing from subalpine forest into alpine tundra before reaching the cirque below the peak.

The lake's identity is inseparable from Longs Peak's east face. The approach passes near views toward Peacock Pool and Columbine Falls, then turns rockier near the lake, so this is a serious high-country hike even though it is shorter than a Longs Peak summit day.

NPS notes that the Chasm Lake route is exposed for about half of the hike and that lingering snowfields can persist outside the heart of summer, useful context for any lake objective in the Longs Peak area.
