About Ptarmigan Tarn #2

Ptarmigan Tarn #2 sits about 100 m southwest of its companion (Ptarmigan Tarn #1), on the same Bighorn Flats bench above 11,800 ft. Both are small, seasonal alpine pools on the broad tundra shelf west of Ptarmigan Point.

Access mirrors Tarn #1: up the Flattop Mountain Trail from Bear Lake to Flattop's summit, then off-trail west-northwest across the tundra. Total round trip is around 15 miles with significant exposure above treeline.

This is a destination for experienced off-trail hikers comfortable with alpine navigation and weather management. The reward is solitude on one of the highest tundra benches in the park — quiet ground that most Flattop summit-baggers walk right past.
